Dissertation
Commercialization of Innovation: From Idea to Market Impact
Innovation is only as powerful as its ability to reach the market. Commercialization is the process that transforms innovations into real business outcomes by introducing them to customers, generating interest, encouraging use, and ultimately achieving sales success.
What is Commercialization?
Commercialization is defined as the process of introducing an innovation to the market, aiming to achieve market acceptance, stimulate demand, and generate sales. It represents the final and most critical stage of the innovation process – the implementation stage, where an idea proves its worth through real-world impact.
When an innovation is successfully commercialized, it demonstrates its capacity to:
-
Meet market demands.
-
Deliver value to society.
-
Enhance a company’s competitive edge.
-
Drive sustainable economic growth.
Innovation in Bulgaria: The Need for Action
Bulgaria’s relatively modest performance in innovation reveals the need for strategic measures to remove barriers and strengthen the country’s innovation ecosystem. Among the key challenges are the development, implementation, and commercialization of innovations, particularly in the software industry—a sector with high potential due to its technology-driven nature.
A Model for Commercializing Innovations in the Software Industry
The presented model in the dissertation addresses these challenges by offering a structured approach to the commercialization of innovations. Developed through extensive literature analysis and empirical research, the model provides a universal framework that:
-
Supports successful product innovation.
-
Helps companies navigate from idea to market.
-
Can be adapted and applied across various industries.
-
Promotes business growth, innovation-driven competitiveness, and long-term value.
Why Commercialization Matters
Successful commercialization:
-
Makes innovations valuable to real users.
-
Generates economic benefits for businesses and societies.
-
Supports higher living standards.
-
Positions companies as leaders in their markets.
-
Turns innovation into a sustainable source of business development.

Commercialization transforms the innovations into a driver for economic growth.

A Strategic Solution for Boosting Innovation in Bulgaria
This book offers a solution that marks an important step toward improving Bulgaria’s innovation activity and creating an environment that supports the development and market realization of innovations.
The research is conducted within Bulgaria’s software industry, a sector playing a leading role thanks to its access to cutting-edge technology and specialized knowledge—both essential elements in the innovation process.
The book features an in-depth literature review and analysis of the concepts of innovation and innovation commercialization. It identifies the key factors necessary for the successful development and commercialization of innovations.
At the core of the publication is a commercialization model for innovations in the software industry, designed to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop innovative products and bring them successfully to market.
While created for the software sector, the model is also adaptable for companies across other industries, providing a practical framework for translating innovation into competitive advantage.

An Integrated Model for Successful Product Innovations
This monograph presents the author’s original theoretical and empirical research on product innovations—a field of study that demands a deep exploration of the current state and challenges surrounding product innovation in business.
The main objective of the work is to develop and present an integrated model for successful product innovations. Existing models focused on product development often fall short of meeting all success criteria defined by modern business organizations.
A key task of the researcher is to validate theoretical knowledge through empirical research and to uncover hybrid opportunities for creating an innovation process model that is adaptive to a rapidly changing environment and the unpredictability of market demands and customer expectations.
Through this monograph, the researcher contributes to the advancement of both theoretical and practical knowledge on product innovation. The outcome is a valuable tool for business organizations: a comprehensive innovation process model that brings together the author’s theoretical insights, empirical validation, and real-world applicability.
